Jessica Barba- Teen Suspended Over Anti-Bullying Video That Fakes Suicide

On : 2012 May 23

Jessica Barba, a 15-year-old Long Island high school student was hoping to raise awareness when she created an anti-bullying video and a Facebook page featuring fictitious suicide for a class assignment.

But the anti-bullying project landed the High School freshman in some hot water, and led to her suspension from school.

"The principal told me I would be suspended for five days because my video disrupted the school." Jessica said.

The six minute video tells the story of "12-year old Hailey Bennett" - a fictional character (played by Jessica) who gets bullied at school daily, is taunted on social media sites and eventually, ends her life.

Jessica also created a fake Facebook page for her character with disclaimers saying Hailey was a fictional character.

However, a concerned parent became alarmed after seeing the Facebook page and called the police, who contacted the school. The fake profile has since been removed from the social media site.

"I couldn't even believe that I was getting in trouble for something that I had worked so hard on, and the only intent of it was good" Jessica said in an interview.

Jessica's parents and classmates are protesting her suspension.

"This is an absolute great project and I'm very proud of her. I think most schools would just give her an A on it. Anybody who watches has nothing but great things to say about it," said Jessica's dad.

There are some things about the whole chain of events that disturb me. If the police came in to the school with a facebook page of a student they thought was being bullied and was potentially suicidal, why was the alleged victim brought to the principal for interrogation instead of being sent to the school psychologist or guidance counselor for questioning? Why weren't Jessica's parents notified right away so they could view the facebook for themselves and judge if Jessica was in fact being bullied? If the school was taking this seriously, why weren't the pretend bullies questioned or punished?  Why would the school continue with the suspension and want the associated youtube video  taken down once they realized the true nature of the project? The video has a very good message.  I think Jessica is handling things very well for a 15 year old but this kind of National attention has got to be pretty traumatic.  I also think there are a lot more questions that need to be asked and the school needs to be coming up with better answers about how they handle bullying at their school  than " she caused a disruption", because right now it looks like their policy is to bully potential victims into silence.
