Madonna encountered a negative reaction from fans when she walked the red carpet at the premiere of her directorial debut film W.E. in London on Sunday.

The Material Girl was booed by the British crowd as she arrived at the 55th BFI London Film Festival in Leicester Square for the screening of her film.

According to reports, fans, who had waited for hours in London's Leicester Square to see the superstar, booed after she swept through the crowd quickly, interacting with only "a handful" of onlookers.

Madonna, however, shrugged it off, telling Sky News, "I do know what it's like to be misunderstood on a global scale," comparing herself to the subject of the film, Wallis Simpson, the American socialite who married Prince Edward, future King of England, in 1937, forcing him to abdicate the throne.

"She lived at a time when women didn't have the opportunities that they do now. She didn't have the chance to defend herself, so I'm taking that opportunity now."
