Former California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger admitted Tuesday that he fathered a love child more than a decade ago with a longtime member of his family's household staff.

Just last week Schwarzenegger and his wife of 25 years, Maria Shriver announced their split. Shriver reportedly moved out of the family's Brentwood, California, mansion earlier this year after Schwarzenegger admitted to fathering a love child with a former staffer.

According to The Los Angeles Times, the staffer worked for them for twenty years and retired earlier this year. The name of the child or the housekeeper hasn't been released.

Schwarzenegger, 63, took financial responsibility for the child from the beginning and continued to provide support over the years, according to the L.A. Times.

In a statement Schwarzenegger said, "After leaving the governor's office I told my wife about this event, which occurred over a decade ago." He added, "I understand and deserve the feelings of anger and disappointment among my friends and family. There are no excuses and I take full responsibility for the hurt I have caused. I have apologized to Maria, my children and my family. I am truly sorry."

The couple has four children together, Katherine, 21, Christina, 19, Patrick, 17 and Christopher, 13. Shriver, a former television journalist, is the daughter of Sargent Shriver and Eunice Kennedy Shriver, sister of John F. Kennedy.
