Auditions for Simon Cowell's new talent show The X Factor kicked off in Los Angeles this Sunday.

Thousands of wannabe singers braved the harsh weather outside the L.A. Sports Arena for a shot at stardom. A record-breaking 18,000 hopefuls reportedly made it to the L.A. auditions.

The X Factor, which is a huge hit in the United Kingdom, allows singers and vocal groups as young as 12, with no upper age limit. The winner will land a $5 million record deal, the largest guaranteed prize in television history.

X Factor will have four judges and they will serve as mentors.

"Halfway through the competition, the contestants are split off into categories and they start mentoring those groups," Rob Wade, an executive producer on the program said. "And it always becomes a competition within a competition because the judges are fighting against each other too."

After L.A., auditions will be held in Miami, New Jersey, Seattle, Chicago and Dallas. The show is set to premiere on FOX this September.
