Oprah Winfrey has revealed her family's big secret on Monday's broadcast of The Oprah Winfrey Show-- She has a long-lost half-sister.

Winfrey discusses on her show today how her mother Vernita Lee had another child named Patricia, who was given up for adoption at an early age in 1963. At that time Winfrey was 9 years old and living in Nashville with her father. Winfrey said she never knew her mother was pregnant.

Patricia, who lives in Milwaukee, said that she discovered Winfrey was her half-sister while searching for her birth mother in 2007. She spent three years trying to contact Winfrey and finally reached her in late 2009. The two had an emotional first meeting on Thanksgiving Day.

Patricia has 2 adult children Andre and Aquarius, who she raised as a single mom.

"It was one of the greatest surprises of my life," Winfrey says on her show. "It left me speechless."

"What is so extraordinary is they have known this secret since 2007... She never once thought to go to the press. She never once thought to sell this story," Winfrey says.
