Prince William Proposed With Princess Diana's Engagement Ring (Photos)

After eight years of an on-off relationship, Prince William popped the question to his girlfriend Kate Middleton, and he did it with a truly historic piece of jewelry: the same engagement ring that his late mother Diana, Princess of Wales, got from his father, Prince Charles.

The ring is an oval blue 18-carat sapphire surrounded by 14 smaller white diamonds.

"It is very special to me," William told press at St. James' Palace Tuesday. "It was my way to make sure my mother did not miss out on today and the excitement that we are going to spend the rest of our lives together."

The ring, picked up by Queen Elizabeth for Diana, was originally priced at $65,000.
