Bald Miss Delaware Kayla Martell 'Early Show' Video

On : 2010 Jun 28

Newly-crowned Miss Delaware Kayla Martell appeared on "The Early Show" Monday. The 21-year old Milford native suffers from an autoimmune disease called alopecia, and has been bald for 10 years.

Kayla has competed without her wig twice, and finally won Miss Delaware wearing a blonde wig. "But, you know, when I competed without the wig, it was great because I was really representing who I am," she told Early Show host Erica Hill.

"Without the wig, people might be afraid to come up to me and talk to me and ask me about what alopecia is, because there's a misconception that if you see a woman that's bald that she has cancer. This way, with wearing the wig, people are not afraid to approach me ... and I can bring up alopecia on my own terms," Kayla said.

Watch Kayla and her inspiration, a five-year-old girl named Lilliana Hakim, who suffers from the same disease, share their stories on life with alopecia.
