Former Vice President Al Gore and his wife Tipper are separating after 40 years of marriage.

"We are announcing today that after a great deal of thought and discussion, we have decided to separate," the couple announced via e-mail. "This is very much a mutual and mutually supportive decision that we have made together following a process of long and careful consideration."

Al Gore, 62, lost the presidential election to George W. Bush in 2000 and won a Nobel Peace Prize in 2007 for his work against global climate change. Tipper Gore, a professional photographer, was actively involved in her husband's presidential campaign.

They are parents to Karenna, 37, Kristin, 33, Sarah, 31 and Albert III, 28.
