Country stars Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert got engaged over the weekend.
"He called my dad and got his blessing first," Lambert, 26, told PEOPLE of her beau's surprise proposal on May 9. "That was so Southern and old-school and just perfect."
Shelton got down on one knee in the woods near Lambert's home and presented her with a diamond and platinum ring.
"I was so proud of him," says Lambert. "He knew exactly what I would've wanted but it's so much more perfect than I could have picked out myself."
The couple have been together for five years. Lambert scored her first No. 1 single in January with "White Liar." She won Album of the Year and Top Female Vocalist at this year's ACM awards. Lambert was nominated for two CMT awards on Tuesday.
