Joe Cada - a 21-year-old college dropout became the youngest winner at the World Series of Poker after earning a $US8.5 million jackpot in Las Vegas early Tuesday.

Joe Cada of Shelby Township, Michigan, won with a pair of nines in a head-to-head showdown with second-place finisher Darvin Moon, 46.

It was played before an audience of more than 1,500 people at the Rio Hotel-Casino at a table stacked with bricks of cash. Cada broke a record for the tournament's youngest winner set last year by Peter Eastgate of Denmark.

"His family played poker around the kitchen table," one of his uncles said. "He just loves the game. He just loves to play."

Cada started playing poker online at age 16 and left Macomb Community College in Michigan to become a professional gambler.

He is the son of an out-of-work auto parts design engineer. His mother, Ann is a blackjack dealer at a Detroit casino who tried to dissuade her son from gambling when he left college for online poker.


Moral of the story : Don't listen to your mom!
