Kelly Ann Walz - Woman killed by Pet Bear While Cleaning Cage

Kelly Ann Walz - a Pennsylvania woman was killed by her 350-pound black pet bear as she cleaned its cage Sunday evening.
Kelly Ann Walz, 37, was found dead at about 5 p.m. by Pennsylvania State Police.
Walz went into the bear's 15-by-15-foot steel and concrete cage throwing some dog food to one side to distract the bear while she cleaned the other side. While she was inside, the 350-pound bear turned on Walz and killed her.
A neighbor shot and killed the bear while it was mauling Walz.
Her husband, an exotic pet dealer also kept a Bengal tiger and an African lion on the house. Both of those animals were licensed by the state to be kept as pets.
As the Pennsylvania Game Commission spokesman says, they are wild animals - not tame animals. Just because you have a license to keep them doesn't mean that they are safe. They are unpredictable and dangerous even after living among humans for years.
Unfortunately, Walz learned it the hard way.

There's reasons you you do not keep wild animals as pets, even if you've raised them, they are WILD animals! So a wild animal was destroyed because it was doing what was natural to it. When will people "get this"? No matter how well treated or "raised", a wild animal is a wild animal.

Why do people not learn that animals have a mind of there own and should be treated as they do. We need to respect that.

Just remember all you dumb bunnies out there that think bears are so cute, they can turn mean in a second and are wild animals. It isn't like the starbuck ad where a woman is out in the woods and sees a bear then gives it a hug. OMG how stupid can some people be?!

these people are morons.....an animal is an animal is an animal! (wild ones)! and then the bear has to pay for this with its life. what a shame...guess it isnt much different with these tree huggers hiking around in bear territory...(thier territory thier meaning the animals) and get attacked by a cougar or a bear...and they hunt down the animal and kill it...people will never wake up....

I think that licensing people to have exotic animals as pets is stupid. you can take these animals from the wild but that's exactly what they are, wild. Yes their beautiful but leave them where they belong.

everyone is so silly about this. The truth is she decided to keep an animal and knew the risks involved. If we has people keep destroying or world there will be no animals left. You feel sorry for the bear in a cage? Yet you but so many products that have killed thousands of them, by taking away their homes. You think the lady was stupid for keeping a wild animal? well she enjoyed it and knew the dangers, that was her choice. the only stupid part of this was where was the husband? Anyone caring for ANY large animal alone draws some questions. If anythng the husband is to blame for not being there.

Most of the licences given out by state agencies to private individuals to have dangerous animals in their homes eg leaopards, bears, snakes etc should be audited by an independent agency to see if they should have been given out in the first place. Next, they should be renewable every year after a home inspection. If this turns out to be too expensive, they should be eliminated entirely. These animals belong in zoos, not homes!

Wild bears do NOT eat dog food. They eat berries, fish, and....ummmm...PEOPLE. Thats what happens when you keep a wild bear in a cage as a "pet."

She deserved it!! I think anyone would do the same thing to someone who had them lock them up in solitary confinement in a cement room the size of a bedroom all their life. You would eventually do what you had to do to get out of there. Even in prison, the prisoners are allowed out of the cell to spend some time in the yard. Solitary confinement is the worst. What did the bear do to deserve that. If she had not been killed, then because of what she did to that bear, she would deserve to be locked up in solitary confinement in a cement bedroom for the length of time she locked up that bear. How could she do that to the bear?! She took his life away from him and locked him up in cement room the size of a bedroom. He didn't deserve that. She took the life away from the bear, so she deserves to have her life taken away by the bear. An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth, and a life for a life. She got what she deserved.

I agree with all these comments, a bear is a wild animal, no matter how long it has been with humans! Ya know the saying " You can take the animal out of the wild ,but you cant take the wild out of the animal " I sure do not see any sympathy for the dead woman, her kids or husband, that is where i disagree! This is horrible for that family I pray for her children & her husband. I think it is just plan wrong to calll them names like moran, stupid, dumb and so forth!!! You folks that do that are they real dopes! Have a little sympathy for the dead, and what a way to go mauled to death by a large animal! I love anumals also, but not above human life!

Zoo Attractions, Circus Tents, Animal Inclosures, Theme Parks, and above all man made "CAGES" are not where God originally installed wild animals.
Can those of us who keep and house his creations in such deplorable, abomanable and decrepted inhumane conditions really consider ourselves to be "HUMAN" ??? I think not !!!
I personally pray for the day when we humans learn to truely respect all of God's creations. Until that day, may God have mercy on us all for our maltreatment of those wild beings he saw fit to place here on earth among us so called humans !

Ok, I live in a world of ignorance. First, yes these are wild animals-you can take them out of the wild, but not the wild out of them. Second WE-the human animal (sorry if that offends but facts are facts-when it all comes down that is what we are)have created a world that no longer has the capabilities of supporting the WILDLIFE in its own habitats, WE have destroyed more than 50% of the habitats they need just to exist let alone live and be left alone or not encounter us there. They do not understand why this is happening and why they cant eat what is right in frony of them, to them they are top of the food chain. We dont know the history of these particular animals, were they wild caught? Human RAISED and or bred, were they taken from an abusive person? There are alot of reasons these animals end up in these situations. I am not defending the couple in ANY way shape or form, but as the media has once again proven they are incapable of telling the WHOLE story. I agree the licencing of these beautiful and wonderful (all be it WILD) creatures definately needs to be done alot diferently-only after extensive training and properly accomondating-and regulated more severely and should cost alot more to make sure the regulators are abundant and well trained. Lastly each and every one of US has the ability to CHOOSE how we live OUR lives, the world we live in INCLUDING ALL OF ThE CREATURES that we were meant to care for-plant and animal-DO NOT have that LUXURY, so do all of the judging and condeming you will, but if YOU are not educating yourself and being partof the solution-YOU YOURSELF are part of the problem. IT IS AN AGE OLD AND VERY SIMPLE CONCEPT. CONDEMNATION OF THE BEAR OR THE PEOPLE WILL GET US NO CLOSER TO THE SOLUTION,BUT EDUCATION, COMPASSION AND ACTIONS (NOT WORDS), ARE THE ONLY THINGS THAT WILL GET US THERE!

Animals should never be caged. I hate seeing an animals caged up. The biggest predator on earth is human, you and I and the rest. That poor bear caged in a 15 x 15 room. He probably killed her just to get out of that enclosure where he spent his life. If you have to cage an animal then you shouldn't own the animal. Wild animals are meant to run wild. It wasn't the bear's fault it was the owner. I hope they take the licenses away from the husband and the rest of the animals that they have there caged up in some small space. There are rescue places that do have wild animals but they have room for them to roam, acres of space. They don't spend their lives in a little cage. I don't go to the circus because of the way they treat their animals, especially the elephants. They are very cruel to them.

You have our sincere condolences in the loss of your wife. May Jehovah God be with you and comfort you and your family with the hope of the resurrection. We look forward to the time when all animals will not longer be a danger to us or to themselves. Isaiah 11-6-9..."they will not do any harm or cause any ruin.." May Jehovah be with you while we wait..Ps.37-10-11"just alittle while longer"...

I knew Kelly and let me tell ALL of you- these animals were not pets. She and her husband took them in when humans thought they were "cute" then discarded them when they grew. They were too old to be "back in the wild". Granted, they maybe should have been in zoos but they took them in so these animals would not be put down. Some of these comments about a woman dying are down right cruel and I am ashamed to be part of the human race knowing YOU are part of it. If it was someone you knew, you would not be saying these horrible things. You have no right to speak your opinion when you do not have all the facts.

they shouldn't have shot the bear it wasn't his fault he was in that cage it's always the animal that suffers when the human is stupid i hope they take the rest of the animals away and put them into a proper sanctuary

I agree that wild animals should not be kept in cages or as pets and I'm sorry my friend learned this lesson with her life. BUT- please keep in mind that Kelly was someones daughter, a mom to 2 children, a wife and a friend of many. A horrible, horrible tragedy occurred, a mistake made and her family and friends will never be the same for losing her. She was an animal lover and a wonderful equestrian, and just think about the fact that this was a real person who people are crying over and maybe you can reserve your harsh judgement of her.

Some of you should be ashamed of your comments! This family just suffered a TRAGIC AND UNFORTUNATE loss, a WIFE, MOTHER, daughter, friend. Look up her guest book and read the wonderful comments people posted in memory of her. If you disagree with the animals they house, keep your NASTY comments to yourself. To each is own. They cared for the animals, had a permit and underwent inspections that mind you, DID NOT FAIL so they were being responsible. If you don't like it then protest for all the Zoo's out there to be closed, there is NO DIFFERENCE
