In her memoir "Hungry", Crystal Renn, a plus-size model details her struggles with anorexia as a young model and reveals how close she came to death.

23-yr-old Crystal Renn is now, the world's most successful plus-size model. With her curvy figure she has walked the runway for Gaultier, graced the pages of Vogue, Glamour and appeared in ads for Dolce & Gabbana.

But a few years ago, Renn nearly died after she was pressured to lose nearly half her body weight to succeed in the industry that is obsessed with size zero.

By barely eating, taking diuretics and exercising, the 5'9" model dropped to 95lb, with a waist measurement of just 33in.

"I couldn't walk another step without being exhausted, or having hair clumps falling out," Renn reveals.

"I got to my lowest point, when I couldn't go lower, and it was either, "I'm going to die and not accomplish the dream, or, "I can become a plus-size model and keep the dream," she said in an interview.

After years of fighting, Renn eventually embraced her body and is happy to call herself a size 12 plus-size model.

"I am healthy now, the healthiest I've ever been in my life-both physically and mentally," Renn said. "People actually want to work with us because we're happy, our individuality is prized. Before I was just another straight-faced lemming, we all looked the same," she said.

Renn's autobiography "Hungry: A Young Model's Story of Appetite, Ambition and the Ultimate Embrace of Curves" arrived in stores on Sept. 9.

Why on earth is this woman considered a plus size model?

# DodieMarie -9/28/2009 3:59:35 PM
Unfortunately, Wendy Fish, that is the norm. A few years ago, I saw an ad for plus-size clothing that started the "plus" at a ten. That's right, they actually advertised a size 10w. So apparently, at least in the world of fashion, any size that is double-digits is plus. It is ridiculous.

She's plus sized per the modelling industry - but the average size for a woman living in the US today is a size 14.

So she's actually quite normal - like us.

She proves that beautiful can be something other than super skinny. But I'm still depressed we're calling her "plus size."

Most models in magazines range in height from 5'8" to 5'11" and weigh from 110 to 125. That is seriously underweight but is the norm in modeling. It is wonderful that real women are finally being represented in fashion.

It is a serious disappointment when society has to teach the young women of today that size 12 is plus size. How about we start taking a hard look at the modeling world and how they make their models be aneroxic and starve themselves to death. We are the norm people, we need to stand our ground and teach our young women that being healthy and loving themselves is so much more important then what the latest fashion is on the runway

I use to be anorexic, I was never a model. I just wanted to look like the women in the magazines and on t.v. That was what everyone portrayed as beauty. I wanted to dress like them and look like them in my clothes. After getting to 69 lbs and i'm 5"9. It was a struggle for life. I am a size 2 I weigh 120. I am still working on my issues. It is such a blessing to read stories like this. It honestly helps. I am learning to love myself because others do, who may look different from what everyone else see's as beautiful. Young ladies need to believe that beauty comes in all shapes and sizes!

I've always been a fan of plus-size models! There's a great site with many images of Crystal and other plus-size models here:

They're all gorgeous.

The site's forum also has thought-provoking discussions about body image and the media.

Since when is a size 12, a PLUS SIZE...this article is as phoney as the SIZE ZERO. It still distorts body sze and now oozing the slimy mental crazies of Natzi Zero , into main stream normal sizing of healthy women...if anything a size 12 on a 5'9" frame is still anoerxic...why don't you  media people get out of young womens lives and not twist another generation of young womens minds.....

The fashion industry has been influencing young women for years about body image.  Who are the major designers in the fashion industry?  Men or women?   The average woman is about 5'5" and 130-140 lbs.  The average size of a woman used to be a size 12.  Now a size 12 is considered to be a plus size.  Tell me why there are so many anexoric or anexoric looking young girls?  They are literally dying to look like the models who have been dying themselves because they have been pressured to lose weight so somebody else can make a whole lot more money than they do.  Why?

I have struggled with my weight for many years.  I  am about 5'4 1/2" and at my heaviest weighed 190+ pounds.  I yo-yoed all my life getting down to about 126 at one point, but could never hold it.  50 years later, I am about 135-138.
Don't let these sizes in the article fool you.  a size 12 today, is what a 16 or 18 was 40 years ago.
I know!  My mother saved all her old clothes, and when I went through them, pants today, that would be a size 8, have the tag still in them and were a 12 or 14 back then.  When I weighed 135# about 35 years ago, I wore a 12.  Today, it would be an 8.  Sizing has changed.  The size 12 in the article is not teeny tiny, but the girl at 5' 9", and wearing a 12 is NOT heavy, and although not a tiny person, is certainly not plus size.  I think of plus size models as those being a little overweight, also.

I think it's a shame when we call a 5'9" person who wears a size 12 a "plus" size model!  That's just rediculous!!!  I thought plus size means anything over a 16 if you are under a 5'6".  We should all be ashamed of ourselves to cause this kind of thing.  When will it stop????  I'm plus size definitely - 5'1" - 200 LBS. Now That's Plus Size.

# Tina Bursack -10/3/2009 8:21:50 PM
It is a sad day in our country when we call a beautiful woman that is a size 12 a plus size model.  I am 5'6" and 250lbs, that is plus size, not a someone in a size 12!!!
