Eunice Kennedy Shriver, California First Lady Maria Shriver Schwarzenegger's mother, and President John F. Kennedy's younger sister, passed away earlier this morning at 2:00 AM. She was 88.

Eunice had spent the past week in critical condition at Cape Cod Hospital in Barnstable, Massachusetts, but no cause of death was given.

Her family members including husband Robert Sargent Shriver, Jr., daughter Maria Shriver and her husband Arnold Schwarzenegger, had been by her side all week.

The family released a statement earlier this morning calling Eunice "a living prayer, a living advocate, a living center of power. She set out to change the world and to change us, and she did that and more."

Among her many accomplishments, Eunice organized the first Special Olympics back in 1968, inspired by her mentally disabled sister Rosemary. She is survived by her husband, five children, and nineteen grandchildren.
