Shortly after winning the Miss Georgia title, school teacher Kristina Higgins stepped down from the post, which is now filled by the runnerup, Emily Cook.

Higgins turned down her crown saying her responsibilities as a middle school would suffer because of the time needed to serve as Miss Georgia. Higgins said in a statement,

"Due to my current job responsibilities as a middle school teacher and the responsibilities and time commitment as Miss Georgia, I have decided to not fulfill the duties of Miss Georgia 2009."

Emily Cook, Miss Cobb County, was informed Sunday that she was the new Miss Georgia. She will now represent Georgia at the 2010 Miss America Pageant.

The 22-year-old Cook is a recent graduate of the University of Miami and had been accepted into University of Georgia's Law School.
