Melissa Huckaby - Teacher Arrested in Sandra Cantu Murder Case

Melissa Huckaby, a Sunday school teacher of Tracy, Calif., has been arrested on suspicion of kidnapping and killing 8-year-old Sandra Cantu, whose body was found stuffed into the teacher's suitcase in an irrigation pond.
 

Sandra Cantu vanished March 27 while playing in the trailer park where she lived with her mother. Her body was found a week later.
 

Huckaby, 28, reported her black suitcase missing on Sunday, the day before Sandra's body was found inside it. Huckaby said she left the suitcase in the driveway and forgot about it.


Huckaby was arrested late last night after voluntarily going to police for questioning. "She revealed enough information that we had probable cause to arrest her for both kidnapping and murder," Tracy Police Sgt. Tony Sheneman said.
 

She is set to appear in court Tuesday.
 

Huckaby is the granddaughter of a pastor of Clover Road Baptist Church, according to Tracy Press newspaper. She and her daughter lived with the pastor and his wife in the same mobile home park where Sandra lived with her family.


How Sandra died has not been made public. The autopsy results and search warrants are still sealed.
