First Gay Marriage in CA

On : 2008 Jun 16

Del Martin, 87, and Phyllis Lyon, 84, will be the first same-sex couple to be officially married, in San francisco, CA. California Supreme Court overturned a ban on gay marriage last month.

At 5 p.m. today court ruling goes into effect. Lyon and Martin will exchange vows in a private ceremony performed by San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom at 5:01 p.m.

The couple have been together for five decades. Phyllis told AP, "We get along well. And we love each other."

Local officials will be required to issue licenses that have the words "Party A" and "Party B" where "bride" and "groom" used to be.

California is the second US state to allow same-sex marriages after Massachusetts legalised them in 2004.
