Ana Ivanovic Wins First Grand Slam Title
Serbia's Ana Ivanovic claimed her first grand slam title by beating Dinara Safina in the final of the French Open tennis tournament, Saturday, June 7, 2008 at the Roland Garros stadium in Paris.
The 22-year-old had reached the final of a major event for the first time after defeating previous top-ranked player Maria Sharapova, Svetlana Kuznetsova.
Ivanovic won match point with a backhand up the line, then dropped her racket, collapsed into a crouch and covered her face. After blowing kisses to the crowd, she used a chair to climb into the stands and share hugs with family and friends.(AP)
The new world number one said, "This was amazing," Ivanovic said. "I still don't realize what happened. As a kid, when I used to go by bike to practice, I used to dream of this."
