Artist Robert Rauschenberg, a pioneer in pop art in the 20th century died at his home in Florida Monday night. He was 82.
A painter, photographer, printmaker, choreographer, onstage performer, set designer and, in later years, even a composer, Mr. Rauschenberg defied the traditional idea that an artist stick to one medium or style and employed non-traditional materials and objects in innovative combinations.
Among Rauschenberg's most famous works was "Bed," created when he had no money for a canvas. His solution was to take the quilt off his bed and use paint, toothpaste and fingernail polish.
One of Rauschenberg's first and most famous combines was entitled "Monogram," a 1959 work consisting of a stuffed angora goat, a tire, a police barrier, the heel of a shoe, a tennis ball, and paint.
